When an unexpected explosion occurred in Beirut in August 2020, killing more than 200 people and leaving about 300 000 homeless, Najla turned to sculpture both to overcome the tragedy and to give something back to her community. She created “6.07”, a collection of 30 pieces of plaster sand, named after the moment of the explosion. All the profits from this series, which were sold at closed counters, were paid to NGOs working in Lebanon. “I wanted this piece to relate to this event in a hopeful way,” she says. “It’s a room that expresses warmth and connection.”
